My Take
Quentin Dupieux is one of the most gleefully uncategorizable artists working today. As Mr. Oizo he made French electro that wormed into your head; as a filmmaker he writes, directs, shoots, edits, and scores movies about, say, a murderous tire, with a completely straight face. What I love is that the absurdity is never lazy: beneath the surreal premises is a precise, almost obsessive control of tone. He has the Officer of Arts and Letters yet carries none of the institutional stuffiness. I'd rather champion a singular, untamed sensibility like his than a dozen safe careers, and I genuinely root for him.
