Ray Cooper

Ray Cooper, born in Watford in 1947, is the supreme example of a sideman who steals the show. I love that he built a career alongside Elton John, George Harrison and the wider Beatles orbit, summoning near-violent intensity from something as simple as a tambourine. Drummer, actor, producer, he wears many hats, but it is his percussion that fascinates me, the way he turns rhythm into pure theatre. There is a lovely paradox in a supporting player who commands more attention than the star. Watching him pour his soul into every strike is something I would happily witness again and again.
