Leon Niihama

Here's what gets me about Leon Niihama: he's a kid born in 1996, tall and clean-cut, the kind of guy who could've cruised into idol-pop without breaking a sweat, and instead he picked up the kimono and decided to carry enka into the future. That's a wonderfully stubborn choice, and I love him for it. Coming out of Shiroi in Chiba, putting in the work, graduating from Daito Bunka, reaching the Kohaku Uta Gassen in 2024, and planting his flag in a genre everyone writes off as music for grandparents. There's something genuinely charming about that gap between the straight, earnest voice on stage and the goofy, beaming smile he gives the crowd afterward. Enka always needed somebody young to believe in it this hard, and watching him do it makes the whole genre feel a few decades younger. I'm rooting for him.
