My Take
What I admire most about Rick Stein is his refusal to chase culinary fashion. While other television chefs reinvented themselves every season, he planted his flag in Padstow and spent five decades arguing that a perfectly cooked piece of fish needs no apology. His programmes are really travelogues about people, and his Oxford-educated curiosity gives them a literary warmth most food television lacks. The OBE and CBE feel almost beside the point; his real legacy is convincing Britain that its own seafood deserved respect. I would happily watch him do nothing but wander a harbour market for an hour, and that, to me, is the mark of a genuine broadcaster.
