My Take
Roland Gift, to me, is all about that voice. As the frontman of Fine Young Cannibals, he had a vocal tone so distinctive and aching that one listen lodges it in your memory for good. Born in Birmingham, he refused the single-lane pop-star path and moved into acting too, which I find genuinely admirable. There's a restlessness and curiosity in that kind of career, an unwillingness to be boxed in. I have a soft spot for performers whose sound is instantly identifiable across decades, and Gift's is exactly that, a voice that still cuts through the years.
