What I admire most about Rubén Blades is how he refuses to be just one thing. A salsa giant, yes, but also a lawyer, an actor, and a politician from Panama City who turned dance music into social commentary. Plenty of artists chase grooves; he chased meaning, weaving stories of street life and justice into songs people could still dance to. The stack of Latin Grammys and that 2018 Gold Medal of Merit feel almost secondary to the sheer integrity of the man.
