Sally Phillips

Phillips is a comedian's comedian, and I mean that as the highest praise. Oxford-educated and a co-writer of Smack the Pony, she has the sharp, self-aware wit that only the genuinely clever can land so lightly. Whether as Bridget Jones's friend or Tilly in Miranda, she elevates the scene without ever stealing it, which is a rarer skill than top billing. Her dual gift as writer and performer is why she has endured. I find myself quietly rooting for the supporting players who actually make ensembles work, and she has been doing precisely that for decades.
