Sammi Cheng

Sammi Cheng fascinates me as a rare example of a performer who got to peak twice. Being crowned the Cantopop Diva in the 1990s with album sales north of 25 million would be a career for most people. Yet decades later she lands a Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress, proving she is far more than nostalgia. Reinvention is the hardest trick in entertainment, and the fact that she pulled it off as a singer turned serious actress tells me she has real range and an unusually stubborn artistic ambition. I respect that enormously.
