My Take
Simon Wells fascinates me partly for lineage and partly for craft. Being the great-grandson of H. G. Wells feels almost too neat for a man drawn to imaginative storytelling, but his real talent is emotional clarity through images. The parting of the sea in The Prince of Egypt still gives me chills, and his animation work on Balto and Fievel Goes West shows a director who understands warmth and movement. I think he belongs to a rare breed who can carry animation's tonal sensitivity into live action. He's an underrated artisan, and I'd love to see his vision get more room.
