Sonam

Sonam, born Bakhtawar Khan, belongs to a golden era of Indian cinema, and what strikes me is how she honored a serious lineage. A granddaughter of the actor Murad, she began in 1987 with the Telugu film Samrat and was launched into Hindi cinema by Yash Chopra a year later. Rather than coasting on her family name, she built a real cross-lingual career spanning Telugu and Hindi films. The late 1980s and 1990s Indian film scene she came up in crackled with energy, and performers who helped define a moment like that always fascinate me. I admire that kind of era-shaping glamour.
