Sung Yu-ri

Sung Yu-ri is one of those rare entertainers who pulled off a genuinely convincing second act. She broke through as a member of Fin.K.L — one of the defining K-pop girl groups of the late '90s and early 2000s — and then, rather than coasting on that idol fame, quietly reinvented herself as a legitimate TV actress. Her run through dramas like The Snow Queen and Hong Gil-dong showed real range, and I've always found it interesting that someone born in Tübingen, Germany ended up becoming a fixture in Korean entertainment on both the music and acting sides. There's a certain understated quality to her that I appreciate — she never seemed to chase the spotlight so much as just keep showing up and doing solid work, which in the churn of Korean pop culture is harder than it looks.
