My Take

What strikes me about Sylvain Chomet is how stubbornly hand-drawn his vision is in an age of computer animation. He came up through comics before films, and you can feel that draftsman's discipline in every frame. His European Film Award for Best Animated Feature in 2010, for The Illusionist, confirmed what The Triplets of Belleville already hinted at: he's a director who tells stories almost without dialogue, leaning on movement and design instead. I find that confidence rare. The French listing here even calls him an architectural drafter, and honestly that fits, his films feel built rather than merely sketched, precise and melancholic at once.
