Hideko Hara

I have a real soft spot for Hideko Hara, and I think it's because she's one of those actors who just makes a scene feel safer the second she walks into it. A Tokyo native born in 1959, she's been working since the late '70s, and instead of getting brittle or grand with the years she somehow got gentler. She's tiny at 156cm but never small on screen, especially in those mother and warm-neighbor roles where she carries this quiet, dependable kindness that lets you exhale. And she's not just an actress, she does voice work, sings, and shows up as a level-headed TV commentator too. That's grown-up grace, and I never get tired of watching it.
