My Take

What I admire most about Taika Waititi is his refusal to treat comedy and tragedy as separate rooms. Jojo Rabbit could have collapsed under its own audacity, yet he balanced satire and grief so deftly that the Academy handed him the Adapted Screenplay Oscar. He also rescued the Thor franchise by simply letting it be funny, which sounds easy and absolutely is not. Coming from tiny Raukokore to Time's list of the world's most influential people, he proves that a distinctly local voice, delivered with warmth and irreverence, can travel anywhere. I will watch whatever he makes next, sight unseen.
