My Take

What draws me to Taraneh Javanbakht is her refusal to be one thing. Poet, translator, playwright, photographer, and by some accounts a scientist too, she is the rare genuine polymath in an age that rewards specialization. Born in Tehran in 1974 and later tied to Canada, she also bridges cultures the way a translator bridges languages. I find that kind of restless, boundary-crossing intellect quietly admirable. People who scatter their talents are often dismissed as unfocused, but I read it differently: she seems less interested in a tidy label than in the work itself, and I respect that deeply.
