My Take

Thomas Jane occupies a spot I have real affection for: the leading man who never quite became a superstar, and who is more interesting for it. He brings a weathered, working-class sincerity to genre material that better-paid actors would sleepwalk through; the final scene of The Mist alone is one of the bravest pieces of acting in modern horror. Knowing he started out as a street performer explains a lot, because there is nothing precious about his craft. He commits absolutely, even when the movie around him does not deserve it. My take is that filmographies like his age better than most A-listers' do.
