My Take

Tom Lin Shu-yu strikes me as the kind of filmmaker who matters more with each passing year. Winning Best Original Screenplay at the Golden Horse Awards for his debut feature is a startling start, but what draws me in is his willingness to mine his own life for material. Autobiographical cinema is risky; it can curdle into self-indulgence. Instead, he turns personal grief into something universal. I see him as a quiet anchor of Taiwanese film, trusting human nuance over spectacle. That patience is exactly why I keep watching what he does next.

Thomas Lin Shu-yu (Chinese: 林書宇; born 1976) is a Taiwanese director and screenwriter. After the critical success of his first two features, Winds of September (2008), for which he won Best Original Screenplay at the 45th Golden Horse Awards, and Starry Starry Night (2011), he has been considered a leading filmmaker of his generation.
