Yang Hyun-suk

Yang Hyun-suk is one of those rare figures who reinvented himself so completely you almost forget where he started — an idol in Seo Taiji and Boys, the group that basically rewrote what Korean pop music could be in the early '90s. After the group called it quits, he could have just coasted on nostalgia, but instead he built YG Entertainment from scratch and turned it into the label behind BIGBANG, 2NE1, BLACKPINK, and PSY. That's not luck; that's a serious eye for talent combined with a real understanding of sound and culture. He's a producer-type who came up as a performer, and you can feel that in the artists he's cultivated — they all have an edge, a rawness that sets YG apart from the slicker factories. Complicated legacy, no doubt, but the musical impact is undeniable.
