My Take
The stage name does half the work, and I mean that as a compliment. "Aa! Shiraki" is the kind of name that makes you exhale before you have seen a single joke, which in Japanese comedy is a real asset — recognition is currency, and most performers spend years trying to buy what a good name gives you instantly. Born 21 November 1976 in Fukuoka Prefecture, she is a solo comedian with Grape Company, the daughter of a former boat-racing pro, and she decided on comedy after watching Michiko Shimizu and Naoko Nozawa on the variety show Yume de Aetara as a teenager. One thing seems clear from the name alone. This is a performer who chose to stand on the side that gets laughed at rather than the side that does the laughing, and that choice takes more nerve than people usually credit.
