Alan McManus

What I respect about McManus isn't a single dramatic title but his sheer durability. A fixture in the world's top sixteen through the 1990s and 2000s, he won the 1994 Dubai Classic and the 1996 Thailand Open and reached three World Championship semi-finals. Longevity like that beats a one-off triumph in my book, because it demands technique that never collapses under pressure. A Glasgow lad out of Holy Cross High who stayed competitive in snooker's gentlemanly grind for two decades, he now reads the game beautifully as a commentator. That second act as a respected voice suits him perfectly. Quiet excellence, well earned.
