My Take

For me Ruschel is far more than a left back. He is one of the few survivors of the LaMia crash that killed most of the Chapecoense squad, and the fact that he returned to professional football afterward carries a weight no stat line can capture. Coming out of Rio Grande do Sul, standing 184 cm and overlapping down the flank, he plays with what I imagine is a survivor's urgency, running for teammates who never came home. Some athletes live in the record books and some live in memory; he belongs firmly to the second kind, and I simply want to applaud him.
