Alan Tam

Alan Tam is Cantopop royalty, full stop. When people talk about the genre's 1980s golden age, his name is unavoidable, and that 1981 Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor reminds you he was a serious screen presence too, not just a hitmaker. What I respect most is his longevity and the way he mentored younger Hong Kong artists rather than guarding his turf. The romantic ballads with those slick modern arrangements defined an era. I think of him as a bridge figure, the kind of veteran who shapes a whole scene's idea of what a star should be. That influence outlasts any single chart run.
