Alba Baptista

Alba Baptista interests me as a case study in how a performer from a smaller film industry breaks out without losing her roots. She put in real apprentice years on Portuguese television — Jardins Proibidos, Filha da Lei — before Warrior Nun made her a Netflix lead in her second language, and that grounding shows in her unforced screen presence. Carrying a fantasy series in her early twenties is harder than it looks; she did it with conviction rather than camp. What intrigues me most now is the director credit beside her name. I suspect her ambitions run well past acting, and I would happily watch whatever story she decides to tell herself.
