Alex Higgins

Alex Higgins is, to my mind, the man who made snooker thrilling to watch. The Belfast-born "Hurricane" played at a pace that turned a quiet game into theatre, and his two world titles plus the "People's Champion" nickname tell you how deeply fans loved him. He was volatile and rough around the edges, but that raw humanity is exactly what drew people to the green baize on television. He passed in 2010 and entered the Hall of Fame, and I think of him as a showman first and a champion second, the spark that lit the modern game.
