My Take

Orel Mangala is exactly the type of footballer the casual fan overlooks and the connoisseur treasures. A Brussels-raised Belgian defensive midfielder, he wins his reputation not through highlight-reel goals but through positioning, ball recovery and the unglamorous job of holding a midfield together. To me, earning a place at Lyon and with the Belgium national team in that role is harder than it looks; you have to be genuinely intelligent on the pitch to survive there. I have a real soft spot for these midfield anchors who control a match from the shadows. He is a craftsman, and I respect that quiet, essential kind of excellence.
