Miyuki Torii

I'll be honest, Miyuki Torii has fascinated and slightly unsettled me for years, and I mean that as the highest compliment. In interviews she comes across as soft-spoken and oddly articulate, almost shy, this slender Akita-born woman who seems lost in her own daydreams, and then she flips a switch and goes full feral, eyes wide, barreling straight off the edge of sanity into a comedy that nobody else on earth is making. That gap is the whole magic. She's not for everyone, and I love that she isn't trying to be. The people she clicks with, she ruins for normal comedy forever. Total one-of-a-kind, and I deeply respect that she built that world alone.
