My Take

I have a soft spot for footballers who carry a small nation on their back, and Schembri does just that. Emerging from Pietà on tiny Malta, then dragging Marsaxlokk to their first-ever league title in 2006-07, he became a local hero before reaching for bigger stages abroad. An attacking midfielder who could also lead the line at 178 cm, he had the versatility I genuinely enjoy watching. Players from non-powerhouse footballing cultures tend to fight harder for every yard, and there's something quietly admirable about a man who steps onto the pitch shouldering his island's name.
