She went from acting to directing and won an Oscar for her short Wasp, then took Red Road, Fish Tank and American Honey to three Jury Prizes at Cannes, which is no fluke. What I admire most is her refusal to look away from working-class life and the messy interior worlds of young women. Her handheld, sun-soaked, almost feral camera makes you feel rather than observe. Even her documentary Cow carries that same tender, unflinching gaze. She earns her acclaim not through spectacle but through pure, stubborn empathy.
