Eiji Bandō

Eiji Bandō is one of those rare guys who somehow had two completely different careers and crushed it both times. In the late 1950s and early 60s he was a genuine force on the mound for the Chunichi Dragons — a strikeout machine who made batters look helpless. But then he walked off the diamond and into television, and instead of fading into retirement obscurity he became this warm, instantly likable presence that Japanese audiences just couldn't get enough of. What really seals it for me is the 1990 Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor — proof that his acting chops were the real deal, not just celebrity casting. And if you know anything about this man, you know about his deep, almost poetic devotion to boiled eggs, which honestly says everything about his charm: he was funny without trying, genuine without performing, and oddly endearing in a way that slick celebrities just aren't. He died in July 2026 at 86.
