Anri Sugihara

Anri Sugihara, born June 1982 in Fukuyama, Hiroshima, made her name as a gravure idol — the Japanese swimsuit-modeling and photobook industry — before moving into television work as a tarento, and she now also works as an investor and businessperson, with books on stock and real-estate investing. The career shape is what interests me. Gravure is brutally age-limited work: it concentrates almost all of a person's earning power into her twenties and offers no obvious next step. Most people in it eventually disappear from the public record. Sugihara instead converted visibility into a second profession built on something completely different — market knowledge, published under her own name. She went freelance rather than staying inside an agency, which in Japan means giving up a safety net for control over what she does next. Her stock-market success earned her the label "zaiteku (money-savvy) idol" by 2014. But the deliberate rebuilding of a career on a foundation that doesn't expire strikes me as the genuinely notable thing about her, more than anything from the photobook years.
