Megumi Kurihara

Okay, 186cm in women's volleyball is just unfair, and I mean that as a compliment. Megumi Kurihara towered over the net, and when she wound up for one of those full-swing spikes you could practically hear the other side groaning before the ball even landed. What gets me, though, is the contrast: she had this bright, almost goofy smile off the court and then turned into a stone-cold competitor the second she stepped onto it, eyes locked, all business. A kid from Etajima out in Hiroshima who grew into the face of Japan's attack — there's something I really respect in that. So yeah, I find myself looking up to her, and not just because of the height. She made being the tall one look like pure power.
