My Take
Ante Gotovina is, for me, one of the hardest figures to write about honestly. A Croatian lieutenant general celebrated for his role in 1995's Operation Storm, he was later indicted by the ICTY on war crimes charges, leaving him suspended between hero and villain depending on who tells the story. I have no interest in rendering a glib verdict on a life lived inside the machinery of war. What I feel instead is the sheer weight history placed on one man's shoulders. Honored with the Order of Ante Starčević, he remains a figure who embodies his nation's most contested chapter.
