My Take
What strikes me about Fauci is the sheer endurance of his career. Steering the same research institute from 1984 to 2022 means he served under seven presidents while keeping his footing in a field as unglamorous as immunology, and somehow became one of the most cited scientists alive. I admire that he stayed wedded to data even when it made him a lightning rod, from the early AIDS years through the last pandemic. The Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Koch medal are deserved, but the thing I respect most is his patience and his willingness to be the unpopular voice in the room.
