My Take

Arnaud Desplechin is exactly the kind of director I gravitate toward: cerebral, a little messy, and unafraid of long, talky, emotionally tangled films. Coming out of Roubaix in northern France and clearly carrying Truffaut in his DNA, he's spent decades dissecting contemporary French family and society. The roll call here, A Christmas Tale, Kings and Queen, My Golden Days, plus a César for Best Director and a Prix Jean Vigo early on, marks him as a critics' filmmaker more than a box-office one. I respect that he writes, directs, and even shoots; he's an author in the truest sense, not just a hired hand.
