My Take
Bill Oddie is my favourite sort of British eccentric. To be a beloved comedian in The Goodies and a serious, lifelong ornithologist is a wonderfully improbable double life, and he committed to both completely. From chasing birds as a boy to becoming the friendly face of wildlife television and a passionate conservationist, he turned two seemingly unrelated loves into one rich career, capped by an OBE. He composed, he wrote, he made people laugh, and he never stopped caring about the natural world. I find something deeply enviable in a life lived so fully on one's own terms.
