Billy J. Kramer

Billy J. Kramer fascinates me as a figure who lived at the absolute center of the 1960s storm yet is too easily filed under 'almost the Beatles.' A fellow Liverpudlian managed by Brian Epstein, he scored hits with Lennon-McCartney songs the Beatles never released, including the UK number one 'Bad to Me.' To me that's not a footnote but a remarkable career in its own right. I appreciate performers who shone brightly inside someone else's legend, and Kramer's warm, melodic voice still carries the optimism of that extraordinary era.
