My Take
What strikes me most about Carey Mulligan is her refusal to coast on charm. Since her BAFTA-winning breakthrough, she has built a career out of difficult, interior women — three Oscar nominations and a Tony nod later, she still picks projects that ask something of her. I admire actors who can dominate a frame while seeming to do almost nothing, and Mulligan is the finest current example of that school. Her 2025 CBE felt less like an honor and more like an acknowledgment of the obvious. Whenever her name appears in a cast list, I assume the film has higher ambitions than average, and I am rarely wrong.
