My Take

Charli XCX fascinates me because she works like a researcher embedded inside pop music. From posting songs on Myspace in 2008 and cutting her teeth in London's rave scene, she has always treated the mainstream as raw material rather than a destination. As a singer, songwriter, and producer she occupies every seat in the studio, which is why her fingerprints survive even on songs she gives away to others. I find her most compelling when she is slightly ahead of the audience, releasing the record people will only understand two years later. Few British artists of her generation have shaped pop's direction so quietly and so thoroughly. She is the scene's forward scout.
