Charlotte Hatherley

Charlotte Hatherley fascinates me precisely because she chose the harder, less glamorous path. Rising as Ash's guitarist, then stepping away in 2006 to build a solo voice while quietly anchoring tours for Bryan Ferry, KT Tunstall and Bat for Lashes, she embodies the rare musician who is content to elevate others. I admire that kind of versatility, the willingness to be the indispensable supporting hand rather than the spotlight. There is a craftsman's discipline in her career that I find genuinely moving. She is the sort of artist whose name you learn only when you start reading liner notes carefully, and she rewards that attention.
