My Take
Chris Ayres represents, to me, the unsung craft of dub voice acting at its finest. Voicing Frieza in Dragon Ball Z Kai and Super, Kei Kurono in Gantz, and Prince Soma in Black Butler demanded an enormous emotional range, and he delivered it while also directing ADR. His Frieza, that chilly, refined menace, still rings in my ears. Losing him in 2021 felt like losing a craftsman the wider public never fully appreciated. I value people who pour themselves into work that lives in the background, and Ayres did precisely that, with skill and heart alike.
