My Take

Chris Waddle, to me, is glory and heartbreak rolled into one. That gliding, unpredictable dribble made him a star at Tottenham and Marseille, a winger nobody could read. But he's also forever the man who skied his penalty in the 1990 World Cup semi-final shootout. I can barely imagine carrying a miss on that stage, yet he's stayed beloved in the game ever since, which says everything about the man and the player. Now he commentates with that dry, easy delivery I genuinely enjoy. Triumph and failure, both fully owned, make for a character with real flavor.
