My Take

What I admire most about Colin Meloy is that he treats songwriting like storytelling. As the frontman of the Decemberists, he built an entire world out of words, weaving acoustic guitar, 12-string, bouzouki and harmonica into something closer to literary folk than ordinary rock. The fact that he also writes for children feels entirely consistent with the bookish, narrative quality of his music. To me he represents a rare kind of artist who values craft and substance over spectacle, and that is exactly why his Montana-bred, Oregon-rooted catalog holds up to repeated listening.
