My Take
For me, Curt Smith is simply that voice on Tears for Fears. Born in Bath and partnered with childhood friend Roland Orzabal, he sang lead, played bass, and helped define the aching synth-pop sound of the 80s that still gets under my skin. I love the rare versatility of a bassist who can also carry a melody with that much warmth and melancholy. There's something almost fortunate about conquering the world alongside a boyhood mate, and every time his low, tender voice surfaces, it pulls me straight back into dusty teenage memories.
