My Take
If you have watched much anime from the past three decades, you have heard Daisuke Sakaguchi even if the name means nothing to you. Born in Kashiwazaki, Niigata in 1973, he broke through as Uso Ewin in Mobile Suit Victory Gundam and then became, for a whole generation, the voice of Shinpachi Shimura in Gintama. What strikes me about his career is how much of it rests on the least glamorous job in comedy: being the straight man. Shinpachi exists so that everyone around him can be absurd, and that only works if the timing is exact. Sakaguchi makes it look effortless. He can also carry a lead outright, as in Blood Blockade Battlefront, or play quieter registers like Satoshi Fukube in Hyouka. The list of roles is the argument. A performer who can anchor a scene without stealing it is rarer than the flashier kind, and far more useful.
