Dan Abnett

I champion Dan Abnett because his commercial output never feels soulless. An Englishman born in Rochester, Kent, he has written prolifically for Marvel and 2000 AD since the 1990s and built a devoted following with his Warhammer 40,000 novels. What floors me is how easily he vaults between comics scripting, prose and science fiction without thinning out; most writers who produce at his volume go shallow, yet he sustains rich world-building and grubby, believable characters. His 2012 foreign-novel award confirms the craft. To me he is both a working artisan and a true storyteller, and I deeply respect anyone who simply keeps writing this well.
