My Take
Daniel Day-Lewis represents, for me, the absolute outer limit of what screen acting can be. Three Best Actor Oscars is the statistic, but the substance is his refusal to do anything halfway: years of silence between projects, total immersion once he commits, and then performances so complete they feel less like acting than possession. I find his scarcity admirable rather than precious — he treats each role as if it might be his last, and sometimes it is. If I could show one actor to someone to explain the craft itself, I would show them Day-Lewis.
