Kō Shibasaki

Kō Shibasaki is one of those rare people who actually pulls off being both a real actress and a real singer, and it kind of bugs me how unfair that is. On screen she's got this cool, unbowing stare that refuses to play cute just to please you, and it cuts right through the frame. Then she opens her mouth to sing and the voice goes soft and quietly wrecks you, which feels like cheating. The early new-talent awards make sense to me; even then she carried this composed, slightly aloof air that never read as showy. I'm a sucker for performers who clearly own their own little world and don't need the crowd to validate it, and she's exactly that. Honestly I'd respect her even if she'd just picked one lane.
