My Take
Daniel Waters is a writer I genuinely root for, because he refuses to be safe. The man behind Heathers and Batman Returns trades in acid wit and gleeful darkness, and that voice cuts deeper than most polished scripts ever do. What delights me is his split record: an Edgar Award on one side, two Golden Raspberries for Worst Screenplay on the other. Dividing an audience that sharply is, to me, proof of real authorship rather than failure. I will always prefer a writer who sharpens his ideas and dares the world to react over one who sands everything smooth, and Waters is firmly on that braver side.
