My Take

Dave Stewart is the kind of artist I admire most: the architect standing just out of the spotlight. Everyone remembers Annie Lennox's voice, but it was Stewart's guitar work and studio instincts that gave Eurythmics that cool, machine-warm sound. Three Brit Producer wins, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, all of it earned not by chasing fame but by making someone else shine brighter. Coming out of working-class Sunderland and reshaping 1980s pop is no small feat. I find his quiet, craftsman's brilliance far more compelling than any frontman swagger.
