My Take

Donavon Frankenreiter is exactly the kind of artist I imagine soundtracking a slow afternoon by the water. A surfer first and a musician second, or maybe both at once, he came out of Downey, California and landed on Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records for his 2004 self-titled debut. That pairing tells you everything about the mellow, sun-warmed lane he occupies. I appreciate that he never pretended to be anything other than what he is: a laid-back guitarist who carries the easy rhythm of the ocean into his songwriting. To me that authenticity is the whole appeal.
